The BIONEXT project has released new policy briefs that highlight the importance of future thinking and transformative change in biodiversity governance.

Our fourth Policy Brief focuses on the power of futures thinking in shaping today’s decisions. Biodiversity is not only essential for ecosystems—it supports human wellbeing, food security, and resilience against emerging risks. Yet, current trajectories show continued decline driven by human activities and climate change. The brief underlines the value of using forward-looking scenarios to better anticipate uncertainties, identify risks, and design policies that are robust in the face of long-term environmental change.

While future scenarios provide direction, real change depends on how societies act. BIONEXT’s fifth Policy Brief turns the spotlight to the processes that can enable transformative change, particularly the role of diverse actors across society. The brief emphasises that halting biodiversity loss requires more than top-down policymaking. Instead, it calls for a system-wide shift in how societies organise, govern, and interact with nature. It highlights the importance of bottom-up initiatives, cross-sector collaboration, and inclusive governance in driving meaningful and lasting change.

Together, these two policy briefs offer complementary perspectives: one on how to better navigate uncertain futures, and the other on how to mobilise collective action to achieve a nature-positive transition.
