Bionext Pathway Animations
These three videos are of a series of three future visions developed by the BIONEXT project. Together, the stories of Sam, Mo and Li present different pathways towards positive futures for biodiversity. They are not predictions or blueprints, but thought-provoking scenarios that encourage us to imagine what a nature-positive future could look like. By engaging with these future stories, we can move beyond narratives of biodiversity loss and consider the choices, policies, and innovations that can help create a thriving future for both people and nature.
Nature for Culture
What if we no longer saw ourselves as separate from nature? In this animated future story, Li speaks from 2050 and describes a world where the boundaries between nature and society have become increasingly blurred. People recognise themselves as part of the natural world, fostering deep cultural, spiritual, and practical connections with the landscapes, ecosystems, and communities around them. In Li's future, life is more localised. Food, goods, and daily activities are closely tied to nearby places and ecosystems, reducing environmental pressures while strengthening connections between people and nature. Caring for the natural world is not viewed as a separate responsibility, but as an integral part of culture, identity, and everyday life. Nature for Nature
What if giving more space back to nature created a better future for everyone? In this animated future story, Mo speaks from 2050 and reflects on a world where ecosystems have been restored and nature has reclaimed much of the space once occupied by human development. Rivers flow freely, forests thrive, and biodiversity has recovered on a large scale. While some natural areas remain accessible for learning and recreation, many are protected from human disturbance, allowing wildlife and ecosystems to flourish. Mo's story explores a future in which healthy ecosystems support healthy societies. Sustainable food systems, restored landscapes, and a renewed respect for nature have transformed the relationship between people and the natural world. Nature for Society
What if, by 2050, nature was thriving again? In this animated future story, Sam looks back from 2050 and describes a world where people have reconnected with nature. Cities are greener, landscapes are connected through thriving ecosystems, and locally sourced food is the norm. Nature is no longer something distant—it is woven into everyday life.
